East
German KM 87 Bayonet - one of the rarest issued
AK bayonets is the East german Kampfmesser
(KM) 87 - This bayonet was developed in 1987
for use with the East German MPiAK74 . There
were only 2000 of these bayonets produced before
the "fall of the wall" and the collapse
of East germany. These were designed as a survival
knife as well as a bayonet. The pommel unscrews
and reveals a small plastic capsule - inside
capsule is one each 3mm, 4mm, 4.5 mm and 5
mm diameter split lead shot weights, two 10
mm long fish hooks, two 15 mm long fish hooks,
two red over green flare matches, one green
over red tip flare match, three iodine water
purification tablets, two 40 mm long straight
sewing needles and one sterile suture kit.
The lid of the capsule contains a plastic magnifying
lens and under a round leather plug in pommel
there is monofilament fishing line. The blade
itself has a protractor on one side and 5 cm
scale on the other. The belt loop contains
a piece of polished steel signaling mirror.
It also comes with a small instruction booklet. |
Egyptian
AKM Type 2 AK47 Bayonet |
The
Egyptians never made an AK74 rifle, so this
is the only type of bayonet they produced
in large quantities. I hav eheard of a red
AK74 bayonet by only in pictures not in person.
These
are not the highest quality but have become
quite rare. They have a brown plastic grip
and low quality materials all around. Made
for the Maadi rifles

Indian INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) bayonet |
The
INSAS is part of the Kalashnikov family - as
such it's covered in the definitive book, "Kalashnikov
Bayonets - The Collector's Guide to Bayonets
for the AK & its Variations" by Martin
D. Ivie. No Commonwealth, Indian or AK series
collection is complete without one. These bayonets
are very rare beasts, and are not currently
available in bulk anywhere on the surplus market,
as they are still Indian current issue. The
INSAS is an interesting bayonet - it looks
like the product of an unholy union between
a Chinese AK, a British L1A3 and an American
M9. Its blade, pommel end, crosspiece and scabbard
tip are acid-blackened, with the rest finished
in a thick layer of orangey-brown insulating
plastic paint. The overall quality of workmanship
is very low, even by Indian standards, but
this is how they left the factory! It's got
a tool scabbard, with wire cutter, screwdriver
and beer-bottle opener! However, if you want
to play with these tools, be aware that the
blackened finish is very fragile, as is the
paint. No maker's mark is in evidence. There
is no belt hanger - this bayonet is factory
fresh, part of a production overrun - the hangers
were from a different manufacturer and meant
to be added later.
